What's Happening
Around Railroad Square Art Park - May 2008

'First
Friday' in May
Each month, Railroad Square participates in the City-wide
gallery hop coordinated by COCA (Council on Culture &
Arts, Tallahassee's coordinating agency for the arts). Rain
or [moon]shine, the show will go on. Virtually all
of the Shops & Studios @ Railroad Square open on this
night and it's a great way to introduce yourself
to the shops, studios and galleries in the Square. It's
an eclectic bunch and the art is amazing.
Railroad Square is the heart of Tallahassee's art district.
This is free to the public, but it's a shopping and art-collecting
opportunity, so feel free to spend as much time as you'd
like in each shop. The art and retail businesses in the
park are all locally owned. Expose yourself to art!
May's
'Second Sunday' is Mother's Day!
Bring your mom out for the art and fun in Railroad Square
on her special day, May 11th. Galleries and retailers will
be open in the park.
Bali HI will be sponsoring an artist doing
portraits of mothers (see their message, to the right, in
'More News from Shops & Studios). Shops will be open
noon until 5:00 pm.
Railroad
Square Location:
The main entrance to Railroad Square Art Park is located
on Railroad Avenue, south of Gaines Street and the railroad
tracks and north of the traffic light at the northern edge
of FAMU. Turn west into at the entrance, come through the
Sculpture Garden, and find our one loop road, which allows
you to 'circle the Square' and visit all of our Shops &
Studios!
Once you arrive, look for our map/brochure at the little
kiosk beside the Office, which will offer you a self-guided
tour around the park. We update this quarterly, so it's
also an accurate directory to the park. Its 'At-A-Glance'
panel reveals the Shops & Studios who open for regular
hours each week.
Upcoming
Events in Railroad Square

621 Gallery:
621 Gallery explores the effects of production
in society with Industry in
May. Artists Mark Abrahamson from Washington,
Ira Hill from Tallahassee, and Gill
Scullion from Connecticut, comment on the effects
of industry in the social environment.
Abrahamson's aerial photographs are a global warning of
how industry impacts the environment. Hill stretches traditional
sculpture techniques in the creation of 3-D social commentaries.
Through assemblages of stencils and templates, Scullion
illustrates how traditional construction practices are
being applied to science with genetic manipulation and
selective breeding. In the Nan Boynton Memorial Gallery,

News from Shops & Studios
Mickee Faust Club:
The Faustkateers will be cleaning up their Clubhouse and
turning right around to offer more original and whacky
entertainment. 'First Friday' will feature
jazz music at the Clubhouse and a documentary about Viet
Nam Veterans returning to the battleground in Asia for
reconciliation and renewal.
Then, at the end of the month, the Clubhouse will be jumpin'
with the Queer as a Faust cabaret, our tribute to Gay
Pride Month (which starts in June, but we're just sooooo
proud we want to start it early!)
South of Soho Gallery:
Our gallery is pleased to feature the artist DeDe
Harter during the month of May. DeDe's exhibit,
Corporate Collection, is a collection of paintings
and sculpture that explore themes of office politics and
cubicle culture. Come see DeDe's work and the works of
other members of the Soho cooperative: Mary Donahue,
Roberto Valdez, Olan Thornton, Charlie Sawyer, Ed Babcock,
Linda Van Beck, Mandy Marvie/Bill Burke, and Susan Peacock.
Hours: 'First Fridays,' 6-9:30; Saturdays,
11-5, or by appointment.
Sean Coyne & Daughters Cabinetmakers:
We are located at 670-3 Industrial Dr. and are open most
Sundays. We design and build furniture and small built-ins.
Bali HI Trading Company:
We wish to thank all of those who supported this past
'Second Sunday's' innaugural 'Circle the Square for Peace'
event. We're looking forward to next year's event being
even bigger and better!
You can still find some of Kelly Wood's
beautiful stained-glass peace symbols at Bali HI. Throughout
the month of May, we will feature the art of Gertrude
Palmer. Gertrude is an amazing artist who is
able to paint very quickly with water colors a la prima
(without preliminary sketch). We love the painting she
did of Bali HI during the March 'Artists @ Work' event.
Gertrude will be available on Mother's Day, 'Second
Sunday,' on May 11 to do watercolor portraits
of your mother for a super-sale price of $45! Be sure
to join us for that special 'Second Sunday' from noon
until 5 pm.
